The six systems every lighting plot is built from

You've spent time learning how to see. How to feel. How to interpret a story and imagine what the light should say.

Now it's time to learn how to say it.

This is where a lot of young designers hit a wall. You know what you want a moment to feel like. You can describe it. You might even be able to sketch it. But when you walk into a theatre and look up at two hundred instruments hanging from pipes, and someone hands you a channel hookup and asks "what do you want where?", that's a different conversation entirely.

If the five angles is about what direction feels like, this is about how a plot actually gets built. Same light, different question. Not "what does this angle say" but "what job is this instrument doing, and what am I hanging to do it."

Every lighting design, whether it's a two hander in a black box or a forty truck Broadway musical, is built from some combination of six systems. Not every show uses all six. Not every show needs to. But understanding what each one does, and what happens when you take one away, is foundational.

One caveat, the same one worth repeating. What follows is presented as standards, the way most of us work. They are not rules. Every one of them bends when your idea asks it to.

1. Frontlight

Your visibility system. The workhorse. The thing that lets an audience see faces, read expressions, and follow the story.

What it does: illuminates the performer from front of house, typically at 45 degrees, or from a steeper position. Its primary job is facial visibility. Making sure the audience can see who is talking, who is reacting, and where attention should go.

What it feels like: at its best, frontlight is invisible. You don't notice it, you just see the actors clearly. At its worst it's flat and washes out everything else you're trying to do. The challenge is that frontlight is necessary but it fights dimensionality. The more you pour on, the flatter the picture gets.

Fixtures:

  • ETC Source Four ellipsoidal, the industry standard. Multiple beam angles, 19, 26, 36 and 50 degrees, so you can match the throw from your front of house positions. A 26 is the most common general purpose choice. Sharp shuttering, clean beam, takes templates and colour.
  • Source Four LED Series (Lustr, Desire), the LED evolution. Full colour mixing removes the need for gel, and the Lustr engine is built to render skin tones well, which matters more here than anywhere.
  • Other LED profiles (Chauvet Ovation, Martin ERA), same function, different colour rendering strengths and beam characteristics.

Colour: frontlight colour is one of the most consequential choices you will make. Too warm and everything looks amber and sleepy. Too cool and skin goes grey and lifeless. The classic approach is a warm and cool split. One side slightly warm, R02 Bastard Amber or R33 No Color Pink. The other slightly cool, R60 No Color Blue or R51 Surprise Pink. That gives you the ability to shift the temperature of a scene by riding one side up and the other down, without ever changing gel. With LED you have infinite options and the same principle: find a warm and a cool that both render skin beautifully, then build from there.

On Hand to God, the frontlight had to do double duty. Early scenes needed warm, inviting light for a church basement comedy. As the play darkened and Tyrone took over, that same frontlight shifted cooler and harder without the audience consciously noticing. The visibility never dropped. The comfort did. That is what good frontlight management looks like.

2. Sidelight

Your sculpting system. If frontlight is about seeing, sidelight is about feeling.

What it does: hits the performer from the wings, from booms, ladders, or low shin positions on the deck. It carves across the body, highlighting one side and shadowing the other, giving three dimensions to everything on stage.

What it feels like: dramatic, sculptural. Sidelight is what makes a body look alive on stage rather than flat. Dance designers lean on it hardest because it reveals the line of the body. Every extension, every turn, every breath becomes visible when light rakes across from the side.

Fixtures:

  • Source Four PARs and PARNels, widely used on booms. PARs give a soft edged, punchy wash. PARNels offer more control with some soft focus adjustment.
  • Source Four ellipsoidals, used on booms when you need shutter control, to keep light off the deck or off scenery you don't want hit.
  • Striplights at floor level, the shin busters, for light that rakes up the body from the ankles.
  • LED battens and strips, increasingly used for colour wash sidelight, especially in dance and concert work.

Height changes everything: high side, at head height or above, creates strong cheekbone shadows and reveals the top plane of the body. Mid side, around shoulder or chest, is the most common position and catches the torso and the most of the face. Low side, at shin level, rakes up from the deck, elongates the body, throws long shadows and feels grounded and powerful.

Colour: sidelight is where you can be bolder than you'd dare in front. Because it's shaping rather than revealing, deeper saturations read as atmosphere rather than distortion. Lavenders, ambers, steel blues. Colours that would look strange on a face from the front feel gorgeous carving across a body from the side.

In Macbeth at the Old Globe, sidelight did most of the emotional heavy lifting. The frontlight was kept intentionally cool and clinical, almost institutional. The sidelight shifted scene to scene: warm amber for the early scenes of power and ambition, cold steel blue as the guilt set in, and deep blood red in the final act that made the actors look like they were being consumed by the violence of their choices. The audience felt that in their gut, even if they couldn't have named why.

3. Backlight

Your separation system. What lifts performers off the background and makes them read in space.

What it does: hits from behind and above, creating a rim of light on shoulders, head, and the edges of the body. That halo separates the figure from whatever is behind it, scenery or darkness or other performers, and adds depth to the picture.

What it feels like: backlight adds air and dimension that audiences feel even when they don't see it. Without it a stage feels dense and flat, everything pasted on one plane. With it, figures breathe. The picture has layers.

Fixtures:

  • Source Four PARs, the classic workhorse. Wide, punchy wash. Use WFL or VNSP lenses depending on trim height and the spread you need.
  • LED PARs (ColorSource, Desire), same function with colour mixing, which is a real advantage when you want backlight to shift with the story.
  • Ellipsoidals, when you need precision. A sharp edged back special on one area, or keeping backlight off a cyc behind the actors.

Colour: open white or a very pale lavender is most common, because the goal is separation without distortion. But coloured backlight can be powerful for mood. Deep blue for night, warm amber for memory, hard white for interrogation.

The rule of thumb: backlight should be felt, not seen. If the audience is looking at your backlight, it's too bright. The best backlight is the kind where, if you turned it off, people would immediately sense something was wrong and not be able to tell you what.

4. Toplight

Your atmosphere and texture system. It can serve as an alternative visibility system, but its real power is creating mood from above.

What it does: comes straight down, or near straight down, from directly overhead. It hits the top of the head, the shoulders and the floor, and barely touches the face. In its purest form it creates deep eye socket shadows and a mysterious, sculptural quality.

What it feels like: weighty. Pressing. It can feel like judgment, like surveillance, like rain, like god, like isolation, depending on how it's used. A single tight downlight on one performer is one of the most powerful tools in the whole palette. It says: this person, this moment, nothing else matters.

Fixtures:

  • Ellipsoidals, the go to for specials. A 19 or 26 degree from a high trim gives a beautiful defined circle.
  • PARs, for broader top wash. Multiple across a pipe create an even overhead blanket.
  • Automated fixtures, when the downlight needs to move, change colour, or project patterns. One moving light on a centre pipe can serve as dozens of specials across a show.
  • Fresnels, for soft edged downlight that blends. A smooth falloff at the edges feels more organic and less theatrical than a hard cut.

A note on McCandless: Stanley McCandless, who literally wrote the book on stage lighting methodology, advocated frontlight at 45 degrees both horizontally and vertically. His system also called for strong toplight as the unifying element, the thing that ties the other systems together and gives the stage a cohesive overhead sky. Many designers still use a general top wash in open white or pale blue as the baseline everything else layers onto.

5. Cyc light

Your sky, your horizon, your world beyond the stage. What creates depth and context behind everything happening in front of it.

What it does: washes the cyclorama, the large light coloured surface at the back of the stage, with colour. From that you build sky, time of day, weather, abstract atmosphere, environmental depth.

What it feels like: a well lit cyc makes a stage feel infinite. A poorly lit cyc makes it feel like a high school auditorium. The difference between a production that looks professional and one that doesn't is often exactly this.

Fixtures:

  • Purpose built cyc fixtures, asymmetric units designed to wash a surface evenly from close range. They throw a wide flat pattern that minimises hot spots. Mounted on the floor as groundrow units, on an overhead pipe close to the cyc, or both.
  • LED cyc units, the modern standard. Full RGBAW mixing means any sky without gel, and blending between colours live inside a cue.
  • Groundrow strips, low profile units at the base washing upward, complementing top down light to kill shadow lines and create clean gradients.

The art of it is the gradient. A flat, evenly coloured cyc is fine. The magic happens when you build gradients. Warm at the bottom fading cool at the top for sunset. Deep blue at the top fading pale at the horizon for night. A slow shift across the width for sunrise. This is where top and bottom units working together become critical. Your bottom units might be warm orange while your top units are deep purple, and the blend in the middle is the entire emotional landscape.

The cyc is the most underestimated system in a young designer's toolkit. I have watched student designers spend hours perfecting area light and specials, then throw a flat wash of blue on the cyc as an afterthought. That cyc is thirty percent of what the audience sees. It deserves thirty percent of your attention.

6. Specials

Your precision tools. Individual lights focused for specific, non repeating purposes.

What it does: a special is any fixture outside your repeating systems, serving one particular moment, effect or location. A pool on a doorway. A shaft through a window. A tight spot for a monologue. A gobo pattern on the floor for a forest. If it's a one off, it's a special.

What it feels like: specials are what make a design feel designed rather than just lit. Your systems provide the infrastructure, the baseline coverage that makes the show functional. Specials provide the poetry. They're the moments an audience remembers.

Fixtures:

  • Ellipsoidals, the precision instrument. Shutters shape the beam exactly. Every special starts with the question: what shape does this light need to be?
  • Templates, or gobos, steel or glass patterns in the gate. Breakup patterns create texture. Realistic patterns create environment. Custom ones let you project anything you can imagine.
  • Moving lights, one fixture serving twenty or more specials across a show by repositioning, refocusing and recolouring cue to cue. Standard practice now on Broadway and at large regional houses.
  • Follow spots, handheld or stand mounted specials operated by a person. Still essential for musicals and big houses.
  • Practicals, onstage sources that are part of the set. Lamps, chandeliers, sconces, neon. Technically scenic, but treat them as part of the lighting system, because they affect composition and can be dimmed and coloured.

The discipline: it is tempting to solve every problem with a special. Can't get the look right? Add a special. Need an effect? Add a special. But every special costs time, money and channels. Use them sparingly and purposefully. A special should feel like an event. If you have forty of them, none of them are special anymore.

In Hand to God there's a moment late in the second act where Tyrone, the puppet, is essentially in control, and Jason, the puppeteer, is fighting to get free. I had one special for that moment. A hard edged, cold white downlight that hit only the puppet. Everything else, including the actor's face, was in relative shadow. The audience's eye went exactly where I wanted it: to the thing that was supposed to be fake and had become terrifyingly real. One instrument. One choice. That is what a great special does.

How the systems work together

Here's the thing no one tells you in school. No single system makes a design. It's the combination, what's on, what's off, and in what proportion, that creates the picture.

Think of it like an audio mix. You have your bass, backlight and cyc providing depth and foundation. Your mids, frontlight and sidelight giving presence and shape. Your highs, specials and toplight adding detail and sparkle. A great mix isn't about cranking everything to ten. It's about knowing which channel to push at which moment.

A simple scene between two people might need only frontlight, a touch of backlight, and one warm special from the side. A battle scene might use every system at full. A transition might strip everything away except a single downlight and a deep blue cyc.

Your job is to know all six well enough that choosing between them becomes instinctive, the way a painter reaches for the right brush without thinking about it.

One principle to carry out of this. Systems are not categories, they're tools. A single fixture can serve different systems in different cues. An ellipsoidal on the first electric might be a frontlight special in act one and a dramatic toplight in act two. What matters is understanding the function, not the position.

Where to start

Pick one show you've seen recently, or one you're working on now. Go through it system by system and ask what each one was doing. Not whether it was good. What job it had.

Most designers can name the frontlight and the specials. Fewer can tell you what the backlight was doing, and almost nobody notices the cyc until it's wrong. Start there, with the two systems you're least likely to be tracking, and you'll find your eye changes faster than you expect.
